The Virgin Of Guadalupe
title The Virgin Of Guadalupedescription California artist Jeffrey Vallance proposed to make an intervention at the Tijuana Wax Museum for inSITE2000. Collaborating with Mexico City-based wax-figure maker Victor Hugo Yanez, Vallance produced three new figures for the museum: the Virgin of Guadalupe, Dante, and former US President Richard Nixon. Vallance started with a list of about twenty-eight names of historical and contemporary figures as potential additions to the display at the museum, and arrive at the selection of the three figures based on the existing exhibition structure. The Virgin of Guadalupe could be seen in full figure situated on her own, while Nixon was placed in the presidential room holding in his hands the symbolic element that came to define his public career, a simulated set of reel-to-reel Watergate tapes, and Dante was placed at the entrance to hell with his hand pointing the way. With his project for the Wax Museum, Vallance deepened his own interest and fascination with the three selected figures. In this way, having followed stories for years from different parts of the world detailing apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Vallance, during a residency period in San Diego, could add yet another apparition to the list - he spotted her up high on a stone column at the Courtyard by Marriott downtown hotel. -- inSITE2000 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 311, Folder 01, Item 386) Tijuana Wax Museum [Title, Date]. title You Can'T Get There From Heredescription Centro Cultural de la Raza (San Diego, Calif.) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) The collaborative contribution to inSITE94 by San Diego artists Mario Lara and Barbara Sexton, "You Can't Get There from Here/No puedes ir allá desde aquí," was located at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego. Consisting of two main elements, the installation dealt with the relationship between trophies of achievement and the individual self-image that often dispels the very essence of what is publicly recognized. The artists created numerous plaques and trophies that were displayed salon style on the walls of the space, while the other central element, a billboard prop, outwardly proclaimed the word PARADISO. - inSITE94 This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 01, Item 199) [Title, Date]. Abandoned Ii: Aerial View
title Abandoned Ii: Aerial Viewdescription Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. The project was from the beginning born of the particular circumstances that describe its location. Situated on an empty lot across the street from the Pacific Ocean at Playas de Tijuana, the installation was intended to serve the numerous abandoned children who live along the border in the beach area. The installation consisted of several pieces constructed from brick and concrete, among them two pieces of fire-heated outdoor furniture, the "Fire Sofa" and "Fire Chair." It also included a shell-like echo chamber titled "Habla/Head - Cabeza/Speak" and a circle of brick school desks titled "The Bricklayers' Class." The installation became a gathering place for locals and a playground for children. - InSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 04, Item 307) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. Chava, a world champion in radical bed dancing, reworked each section of the car to move and spin on its own set of hydraulics and arms. Ortiz Torres produced a film with alien imagery and clips of the car in action to accompany the installation. Between The Eyes, The Desert
title Between The Eyes, The Desertdescription Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art For inSITE97, Miguel Rio Branco presented "Between the Eyes, the Desert/Entre los ojos, el desierto," a triptych of shifting images of the border region's desert landscape, and faces of San Diego and Tijuana residents. The images were set to music and projected onto the wall of a dilapidated room in the ReinCarnation Project in downtown San Diego. Located prominently on the plaza of the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Ramirez replicated a common Tijuana shanty house and thereby placed the issue of socio-economic disparity where it would be difficult to avoid. The artist drew a sharp contrast to that of the modern façade of the CECUT and this apparent tension was further underscored when one ventured inside the building to find the trappings of common Mexican life. The installation included documentary photographs of five similar shanty homes. The artist stated that with this work he wanted to point to one of the sore spots of Mexican society and also posit that while some people may live in poverty they live equally with dignity and pride as members of the same society. --inSITE94 [Title, Date]. You Are Aquí: Freeway At Night
title You Are Aquí: Freeway At Nightdescription Cuban-born artist Arturo Cuenca was drawn to work with the visual language of billboards that crowd the US-Mexican border crossing at San Ysidro. With "You Are Aquí" Cuenca pointed to the obvious - locating border crossers exactly at the point of transition between the two countries. Borrowing from the visual language of the surrounding billboards. Cuenca constructed a new billboard with a manipulated satellite image of the border and had it installed on the Puente Mexico, the pedestrian bridge that crosses the lines of vehicular border traffic. Acting as a location marker, the work was seen by more than 45,000 commuters daily. --inSITE2000 Photographs Puente Mexico, San Ysidro, San Diego, California, United States Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 03, Item 077) [Title, Date]. Project At Maclovio Rojas: Video Documentary
title Project At Maclovio Rojas: Video Documentarydescription Brazilian artist Monica Nador began her project for inSITE2000 with a two-month residency in the community of Maclovio Rojas in Tijuana. Challenging traditional notions of the role of the artist and audience, Nador worked with ten families in the community to implement a collaborative form of decoration for the exterior of their homes. Encouraging each family to identify ancestral signs, symbols, and other imagery associated with their regional and cultural heritage, Nador and a small team of assistant artists began a process of creating stencils to be used in decorating their houses. Working in the community for approximately six months, the artist's motivation that "beauty is good for mental and spiritual health" resulted in brightly painted and decorated houses that residents in the entire community saw as unifying and adding visual wealth that could be shared by all. A video documenting Accion en Maclovio Rojas/Project at Maclovio Rojas was produced as part of the project. --inSITE2000 Decorative Arts, Utilitarian Objects and Interior Design Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art Maclovio Rojas, Tijuana, Baja California Sur, Mexico Paintings Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This video file was extracted from a DVD-R from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 257, DVD 00-30) [Title, Date]. Tijuana Projection
title Tijuana Projectiondescription After a two-year process, Krzysztof Wodiczko's project culminated in two evenings of projections on the 60-foot-diameter façade of the Omnimax Theater at the Centro Cultural Tijuana. Known for his large-scale outdoor projections, with "Tijuana Projection/Proyección en Tijuana" Wodiczko wanted to use progressive technology to give voice and visibility to the women who work in the maquiladora industry in Tijuana. The projections consisted of prerecorded materials interspersed with live feeds from a headset with an integrated camera and microphone designed by the artist and worn by the participating women. This was Wodiczko's first time creating a projection incorporating live segments, adding a certain immediacy and potency to the presentation of these very personal accounts. In preparation for the projection, the artist conducted nearly one year of workshops with eight participating women. His work with these eight women was facilitated through two organizations based in Tijuana, (Factor X and Yeuani), that are dedicated to helping women who face difficulties in the workplace or at home. The pre-recorded and live personal testimonies given by the eight women focused on work-related and sexual abuse, family disintegration, alcoholism, and domestic violence. The scale at which these stories were heard and witnessed in the open space of the city and by an audience of more than 1,500 on the Centro plaza over the two nights created a powerful impact and literally magnified what so often never gets spoken about. The projections took place February 23 and 24, 2001. -- inSITE2000 Centro Cultural Tijuana Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 311, Folder 01, Item 408) [Title, Date]. Toaster Work Wagon: Exhibition
title Toaster Work Wagon: Exhibitiondescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Kim Adam's for inSITE97, Toaster Work Wagon, was a grafting on existing nomadic street life (i.e. concession vehicles). The trailered unit, constructed from the hoods and ends of two Volkswagen vans, set out on daily wanderings around San Diego and Tijuana like a winged toaster. Popping open into a work-waiting station, the Wagon attracted crowds of children and bystanders with its unusual contents. Children's bicycles were grafted into two-headed tricycles that were left at the site for adoption. Children experimented with the bicycles, cooperating with one another to move in one direction or the other. Adam's project experimented with notions of form and function as well as movement and direction. During the public phase of inSITE97, the Wagon was displayed at the Centro Cultural Tijuana. --inSITE97 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 01, Item 009) [Title, Date]. Photographs
title Photographsdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana For inSITE97, Ken Lum created two oversized large-scale photographs that were shown at the Centro Cultural Tijuana. The first photograph showed a young girl in San Diego talking on the phone about plans to eat either Mexican or Chinese food. The second photograph, with text from a popular Mexican children's rhyme, shows a young boy selling American soda and candy. The work suggests the blurring of cultural borders despite the adamantly divisive physical barrier. As a Canadian living near the northern US border, Lum stated that his experience in San Diego and Tijuana during inSITE97 caused him to rethink his notion of borders, and consider how the United States, with its pervasive capitalism and culture, borders nations throughout the world. --inSITE97 Photographs Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 02, Item 210) [Title, Date]. One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Border Fence Decorated With Banners Behind Performance Stage
title One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Border Fence Decorated With Banners Behind Performance Stagedescription Building on a collaborative process that is evident throughout his artistic practice, Javier Téllez's project "One Flew Over the Void (Bala perdida)" involved a sustained engagement with psychiatric patients from the Baja California Mental Health Center in Mexicali to co-create a public event and to document its evolution and final performance. Inspired by the traditional "human cannonball" circus performer, Téllez explored the notion of spatial and mental borders in the context of Tijuana and San Diego, and developed an event that involves sending a "human cannonball" across the border between Mexico and the United States. Through successive creative workshops and exchanges the world's most famous human cannonball, Dave Smith, the psychiatric patients and Téllez collectively devised the backdrop, music, costumes, and radio and television announcements for the event. The performance occurred on August 27 at the site where the Mexico/US border fence disappears into the sea between Playas de Tijuana and Border Field State Park. Finally, Téllez created a video documenting the process and the event. --inSite_05 Imperial Beach, San Diego, California, United States Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image was extracted from a DVD-R from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 198, DVD 01) Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. Curtain Call
title Curtain Calldescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Mexico City artist Felipe Ehrenberg created a two-part installation for inSITE94, "Curtain Call," sited in the concourse of the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego and in the garden of the Centro Cultural Tijuana. The artist installed two nearly identical structures. In Tijuana, the work consisted of a metal framework of poles between which cables were stretched. Across these cables, faceless cotton cloth dolls were randomly hung like human musical notes. In San Diego, the installation took a similar form, except that the framework was built of wood and the lines were made of hemp. --inSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 04, Item 106) [Title, Date]. Mama: Video Screen
title Mama: Video Screendescription Brazilian and Swiss artist team Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg's inSITE2000 project, "MAMA," was based on work the artists undertook during several extended residencies in the region. Interested in investigating the issues of border security and immigration, the artists met with numerous groups, organizations, and individuals on either side of the border to collect materials. Through this process the artists narrowed their work to deal specifically with K-9 US customs officers on the one hand, and on the other, Mexican citizens trying to cross the border illegally. What interested Dias and Riedweg were the maternal relationships of the K-9 officers and how that informed the relationships they developed with their dogs and in turn the work they were performing daily. The work became an investigation of the border between private and public selves, and of the transgression and transference of private psychology on public situations. The project was shown as a video installation housed in two separate structures located in the San Ysidro pedestrian passage, Pasillo Turistico. Built to simulate the shape and size of ordinary cargo containers, one structure contained video of interviews with the customs officers and showed them interacting with their dogs. Each officer was asked to give his definition of "territory" and "authority." The other structure showed a looped video clip of illegal immigrants meeting up at night around a fire waiting for the "right" moment to jump the fence. --inSITE2000 Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art Performing Arts (including Performance Art) San Ysidro, San Diego, California, United States Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 03, Item 095) [Title, Date]. Saline: Plexiglas Containers Filled With Water
title Saline: Plexiglas Containers Filled With Waterdescription For inSITE94, artist Nina Karavasiles created "Saline/La salina" at the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum, part of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The artist built a salt-filled trough that extended from the aquarium-museum courtyard down the hillside towards the water, creating a visual connection to the seaside, the Scripps Pier, and the ocean beyond. Alongside the trough were Plexiglas enclosures containing salt water. Over the course of the exhibition the water evaporated leaving behind salt crystals. --inSITE94 Garden and Landscape Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 01, Item 178) [Title, Date]. Aerial Bridge: Model Planes And Pilots
title Aerial Bridge: Model Planes And Pilotsdescription "Aerial Bridge," by Maurycy Gomulicki, brings together diverse members of model airplane clubs in San Diego and Tijuana through a creative process of personalizing model airplanes and co-creating a flying event at the border. In this piece the experience of personal fantasy that is expressed in the designing and building of model planes combines with the unique experience of forging relationships. Scheduled for September 24, 2005, the event was geld at the cemeted riverbed of the Tijuana River, at the point where the yellow border demarcation line painted down the center of the river channel is approximately level with the intersection of the Via Rápida and the border bridge. --inSite_05 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image was extracted from a DVD-R from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 187, DVD 01) Tijuana River Tijuana River, California, United States [Title, Date].
